There is an increasing demand for early intervention (EI) service providers to engage in continued competence and be more accountable for the achievement of outcomes that make a meaningful difference in the lives of the infants, children, and families serviced under Part C of the IDEA. The early intervention competencies were updated by Dr. Chiarello and Dr. Effgen in 2006 to assist in the guidance of professional development for PTs working in EI. In this course participants will learn about the results of a study that investigated the level of importance of the competencies to the practice of EI and the recommendations by practicing PTs in EI on knowledge and skills essential to understand and implement while working with children and families. The DEC Recommended Practices were developed to provide guidance on practices related to better outcomes for young children with disabilities, their families, and the personnel who serve them. In 2012 the DEC Recommended Practices Commission was tasked with updating and revising the Recommended Practices. In this session participants will learn about the process for updating the practices and understand the intent and use of the new set of practices.
