Acute care physical therapists need to enter into the workforce prepared to practice. However, entry-level practice in this setting has never been universally defined. The Acute Care Section assembled a panel of expert clinicians and educators from across the country to develop a document defining the specific knowledge, behaviors, and actions required of entry-level PTs to be safe and efficient in the acute care environment. These competencies are presented in 5 sections: clinical decision-making, an integral component of all of the sections; communication; safety; patient management; and discharge planning. These sections are interconnected, and entry-level physical therapists must be equally competent in each. This education session will inform clinicians, educators and students on this recently developed Acute Care Sections Entry-Level Skills in Acute Care consensus document. Members of the expert panel will discuss the process, outcome, and future implications for the document on student preparation and patient care.
